Words matter. How we speak matters. How we speak to ourselves matters most. We spend more time with ourselves than anybody else. The way we talk to ourselves is a fundamental factor in shaping who we become. It influences how we feel about ourselves, how we feel about what we can achieve, how we are viewed by the world and how we experience it. WOW… our words really effect our life! Today we speak about words, self-talk, and also about cultivating kindness, self-gratitude, empowerment, and trust. And to do this, we are going to dive into a simple, but effective way of practicing all these components of self-love. It is called Personal Mantra– the repetition of words.
If you think this isn’t for you READ THIS
Before you say, NO WAY, have you ever tried using a personal mantra (or an affirmation)?
If yes, skip this little talk and go onto the info below or 35 powerful personal mantras to use during your personal practice.
If no, wait a minute because I have a feeling that you are definitely mistaken.
Most of us use positive phrases (aka personal mantra/affirmations) all the time to pick ourselves up. Think of the times when you were in a difficult situation or preparing for an exam, competition, interview or new experience.
- “I’ve got this.”
- “I am going to be ok.”
- “I am a good person.”
- “I deserve to be loved”
- “I deserve the best.”
- “I am perfect for the job”
- “I am going to pass, win, achieve…”
How We Speak to Ourselves
We talk to ourselves constantly. Our inner voice is a chatterbox. And alhough much of the time we do not speak very kindly to ourselves, we also have moments when we are our most loving cheerleaders.
In these moments, we are manifesting how we want to show up through the use of loving, compassionate or empowering phrases so that it becomes our emotional and physical reality. This is often how we manage to rise back up, dust ourselves off, and move on.
We do it without thinking – instinctively. Using personal mantra is taking this to another level. We carefully choose our words and repeat them with intention and purpose. We actively put our wholehearted energy into who we want to be and what we want to create in our life through our inner speech. It is a true act of love.
So how do you speak to yourself? Can you easily say that you are loving towards yourself, that you use words that support this journey towards your best self? During normal conversations you have with yourself, is your inner voice empowering you or breaking you down?
Why I love personal mantra
Well, some people may say that they don’t work, but I love them! Why?
I am not going to give you lots of scientific-based reasons about why personal mantras work. I am an ‘experiment it on myself‘ type of girl. If with time it works, then I CONTINUE. If it doesn’t, I STOP and search for my thang. ⠀
⠀
But if you are the kind of person that wants an expert opinion (& I know that tons of people do) there are articles and books that can explain the mantra-brain connection. Google it. You will also find a bit of this type of info below or jump to it by clicking HERE.
⠀
Instead, I can limit my explaination to 6 simple words: I love the power of words!
Words That Abuse
Writer and poet Rudyard Kipling said that words are the most powerful drug known to man.
Not only do words infect, egotize, narcotize, and paralyze, but they enter into and colour the minutest cells of the brain. . . .” – R. Kipling
Words, like drugs, have the power to alter the way a person thinks and feels, They can influence a person to do things that they normally would not do.
When we use words that do not support us, or even worse, seriously hurt and harm us, we are feeding ourselves with a powerful force of negative energy that directly impacts our beliefs about ourselves.
Just as it would be with a child, if you keep telling yourself that you are weak, you will become weaker and weaker. Fact, not opinion.
All words, when they are capable of touching our deepest emotions (especially our insecurities), are potent sources of energy.
Our words quickly transform into who we are. This is the root of their power.
Words That Heal
But just as words can abuse, words can also heal.
So I love personal mantras because they help me heal myself. It is a simple way to get the job done. That’s it.
They bring me back to where I want to be: self-loving, patient, accepting, more focused, equanimous, hopeful, inspired, closer to healed.
Our personal mantra practice supports our journey towards the highest version of ourselves, creating the person and life each one of us desires and that is in alignment with our authentic – unintoxified – self. By cultivating our words daily we instill a profound trust in ourselves. We may even get a little mantra high.
What is there not to love?

The Differences: Mantra, Personal Mantra & Affirmation
Let’s Start With Mantra
The word mantra originates from two Sanskrit words – manas (mind) and tra (tool) – so mantra literally means “a tool for the mind“.
Mantras are usually shorter and more simple than personal mantras and affirmations. They are often just one word or phrase (often in Sanskrit – think Om) that creates a vibration when repeated over and over again. Mantras can be chanted aloud or repeated silently in your mind. The sounds are meant to induce a deeper meditative state, similar to a lullaby soothing a baby to sleep,
Personal Mantras & Affirmations
Personally, I use affirmations and personal mantras exactly the same. When used as part of a manifestation or meditation practice, they both are used to support and encourage positive thinking and action.
Both are more or less specific phrases that affirm, manifest or support something we desire to bring deeper focus on or strengthen about ourselves or in our life.
Sometimes all you need is one word to bring you back. Breathe, pause, listen and release are just a few of the most effective ones.
Personal Mantras & Affirmations – The Similarities
- Personal mantras and affirmations are both highly energetic phrases regarding ourselves and our lives. They are both powerful tools that can help us move towards our authentic self and create the life we want.
- They can both be used to change our mindset and improve our mood.
- They can both support us while overcoming negative and limiting thoughts, beliefs and habits.
- They can both help us return our focus to our goals and desires.
- As long as we can devote total attention to the repetition of our words, they can both be practiced anytime and anywhere – even while doing other things such as standing in line, sitting in traffic, cooking, washing dishes, folding laundry, walking your dog, exercising, getting ready for the day or preparing for bed.
- It often takes time and practice to feel comfortable using them.
- We can personalize both affirmations and personal mantras, or use already created ones.
- There is no right or wrong way to form them and there are no rules for how to use them – it’s all about what works best for us individually.
- Both affirmations and mantras are only effective when they resonate with us personally and they are most effective when based on personal experience and emotions. The only goal: that the words you use stir up a positive, energetic vibration inside of you as you repeat them.
- We can and should modify our affirmations and personal mantras, even on a daily basis to best suit our needs and goals.
So while I will be referring to personal mantra, know that I can just as well be using the term affirmation here.
The Affirmation Queen – Inspiration & Resources
“When I talk about doing affirmations, I mean consciously choosing words that will either help eliminate something from your life or help create something new in your life.”
– Louise Hay, internationally known motivational author and speaker
RESOURCES FOR YOUR PRACTICE
How do Personal Mantras Work?
Personal mantras are designed to give the mind a specific intention to focus on. When you have an intention of focus, it becomes easier to steady and discipline the mind.
With consistency, even a brief personal mantra practice can be powerful enough to bring you into a deeper state of awareness. Awareness is the first step to taking action and manifesting positive things for ourselves and our lives.
A regular practice is essential
To get the most benefit from personal mantra it must become a regular practice. Make it a priority by scheduling it into your daily routine.
Remember: you can practice almost anywhere so NO EXCUSES!
- Start with 90 seconds to 5 minutes at least twice a day. A perfect time to practice is first thing in the morning – even before getting out of bed. Make it part of your morning routine and your intention setting as suggested in my post: How To Stop Waking Up Tired – 7 ways to energize your morning routine. (click to read article)
- Close your eyes, feel how you are feeling and feel your way to your greatest intention for the day. This is how the bes, heartfelt personal mantra phrases are created. Spontaneously!
- Repeat each word or phrase 3 to 12 times. As you repeat them with or without voice, really focus on the words and emotionally feel them in your entire being as a wave moving through you. By feeling them, we believe them and when we believe them they manifest into our reality.
- Make your routine consistent. Less is ALWAYS better than none and consistency is ALWAYS fundamental to change. So do NOT skip a day just because you are in a rush. Make your practice a ritual. Fit them in while brushing your teeth, tying your shoes, sitting in traffic.
- Do not expect immediate results. Focus on consistency and the intensity of your focus and effort. It may take some time before they feel natural or before you notice any positive change. Growing your committment to and patience towards yourself is a major benefit of the practice.

Our greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.”
– William James
The Practice – Getting Into The Zone
- Find the quietest place available to you. You may want to use headphones. With time, you will be more accepting of when your environment is not silent and conditions aren’t perfect.
- Relax your body into a comfy position: standing, sitting, or lying down. If it feels right, close your eyes. Relaxed, but upright and dignified.
- Notice your breath. You may want to take one or several deep breaths in through the nose and deep breaths out through the mouth to ground yourself.
- With or without voice, slowly repeat the phrases, adjusting any part to fit to what you need in that moment.
- Repeat them for as long as you like and have time for. You can repeat them on their own, or as part of a longer meditatation. For example, The RETURNING HOME TO HARMONY & EASE meditation. (click to practice)
- Take a final, deep breath in through the nose & out through the mouth. Sit for a moment or two to feel the aftereffects of your practice. Then return to your day instilled with the zone good feelin’.
- Added suggestion: write them on post-its or as little notes to hang around your home, at work or in your car as a support system to turn to whenever you need a little extra love or inspiration throughout the day. The more you do it, the more it works.
You become what you think about most of the time.” – Brian Tracy
When to Practice Personal Mantra
- When you are feeling stressed. It will bring you back to the present moment.
- When you are exhausted. It will give you that brief break you need & deserve.
- When you are confused. It brings you back to balance and clarity.
- When you need some affection. It is like receiving a love note from someone who truly cares about your well-being.
- When you need to be pumped up before a big event or something scary. It is like a quick, but potent pep talk.
A mantra is a thought. Use a mantra to help you still your mind initially and then move you into silent meditation. – Frederick Lenz
How Do I Find A Mantra That Inspires Me?
The most important thing for choosing a personal mantra is that it has a powerful meaning that resonates with you. You can actually feel it as you repeat it.
The personal mantra you choose should have a relaxing, yet energetic effect.
Whether you choose an already formulated personal mantra, create your own, or practice one as part of a longer meditation practice, always make sure that it feels comfortable and authentic inside. You completely trust in it and your practice.
Everyone has their own mantra. – Russell Brand
How to create a Personal Mantra
- Set your intentions: Spend 1/2 hour alone journaling about how you feel, how you want to show up & what you want. Ask yourself: What is my goal? What do I want today to be about? How do I want to show up for myself and the people in my life? How do I want to feel? (Some days this won’t be necessary. Your word or phrase will jump out at you!)
- Write a declarative phrase or set of phrases that reflect your feelings & your desires in the present moment. GUIDELINES: Get specific and make them simple enough to remember. Make sure that they capture what matters most to you.
- Take a moment to connect with your personal mantra. Ask yourself: Does it represent what you feel in your heart? Do you believe and trust in your phrase?
- Remember that your personal mantra will change.
- Schedule in your practice.
- Remember consistency. Quality over quantity, but every day!
